Iran to Execute Eye-for-an-Eye Justice on Tehran Brawler

It is said that justice is blind. But sometimes, it does the blinding. A man in Tehran will be blinded as punishment for causing another man to lose his sight in one eye, the IranWire news site reports. A Tehran court handed down the sentence, based on the Iranian legal principle of qisas (retribution), to a 45-year-old man who was convicted after being involved in a violent altercation with his neighbor. It’s not the first time Iranian courts have resorted to such punishments, but they are unusual. In 2008, a man was sentenced to blinding after being found guilty of an acid attack. In that case, the victim pardoned the attacker at the last minute, saving his sight. In 2015, another man found guilty of an acid attack wasn’t so lucky; no pardon came, and Iranian medics carried out the punishment, removing one of his eyes. In 2016, after a man threw lime into the eyes of his 4-year-old niece, blinding her, the court ordered him to be blinded in both eyes.
