Troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and backed by Iranian-sponsored gunmen are in the final stages of a last push to take control of territory spanning from southwest of Damascus to the Israeli border, an area where the last bastion of anti-regime rebels are holding out. Among the fighting forces battling the rebels is the Iranian-backed Lebanon-based Hizbullah, the group at the center of recent revelations that former US president Barack Obama prevented an investigation of the organization’s drug trafficking in order to give Iran cover when he was pushing the Iranian nuclear agreement. Numerous attacks by Israeli jets on targets inside of Syria speak to the Jewish state’s determination to follow through on its vow as the reasoning behind the policy becomes clear: absent the anti-Assad rebels, a clear channel exists for shipment of arms and terrorists from Tehran to Lebanon, across Syria all the way to the Israeli border.
