Iranian TV Denies Cairo Shutdown

Reports that Egypt has closed down the offices of the Iranian Al-‘Alam TV in the country were vociferously denied by the station’s head office on Friday. The “International news channel Al-‘Alam has not received any official notice from competent Egyptian authorities to declare the reported closure of the satellite television’s office in Cairo,” the company said in a statement. The channel reported police officers ransacked its offices in the city a few days ago, confiscating equipment and tapes. This latest spat between Cairo and Tehran follows the production of an Iranian film, Assassination of Pharaoh, which was critical of the late Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat, who signed a peace agreement with Israel in the late 1970s. There is a street in Iran named after Khalid Islambouli, the man who assassinated Sadat.
