Iran’s UN Voting Rights Suspended Over Late Dues

Iran is seeking alternative ways to pay funds it owes to the United Nations after Secretary-General António Guterres announced last week that it and seven other countries had temporarily lost their voting rights over late dues. UN members lose their voting rights if they owe an amount equal to or exceeding the dues they should have paid over the preceding two years. This is the second year in a row that Iran has had its voting rights suspended over late payment. After months of negotiations, Washington allowed Tehran to access a small portion of blocked funds in South Korea, enabling it to pay its UN dues and regain its voting rights in the international body. Iran reportedly must now pay at least $18 million to restore its rights. “The Islamic Republic of Iran has always been committed to pay for its membership on time and we have shown this in action before,” Majid Takht Ravanchi, Iran’s permanent representative to the UN, said on Friday, adding that the Islamic Republic was looking for a “safe channel” to make its payment to the organization. He blamed “cruel US sanctions” for the delay and said, “The funds are there in our accounts abroad but can’t be accessed.”
