Iraq Charges ISIS with Genocide

Addressing the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, Iraq’s representative charged the Islamic State (ISIS) with committing genocide as it rolls through Iraqi territory, obliterating villages and towns while absorbing assets. Ambassador Mohammad Ali al-Hakim told the body that, “These terrorist groups have desecrated all human values. They have committed the most heinous criminal terrorist acts against the Iraqi people whether Shiite, Sunni, Christians, Turkmen, Shabak or Yazidis. These are in fact crimes of genocide committed against humanity that must be held accountable before international justice.” The BBC reported on Tuesday that ISIS burned alive at least 45 people captured in the Iraqi city of Al-Baghdadi, some of whom were civilians and some of whom were members of Iraq’s security forces.
