Kurdish protesters clashed with Turkish police officers in Istanbul overnight, as they demonstrated against Ankara’s military offensive against the Kurdish rebel organization, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Turkey’s foreign minister was in Iraq on Tuesday as part of a bid to find a diplomatic solution to the PKK crisis. Turkey is talking up an invasion of northern Iraq in order to combat the PKK fighters in Iraqi territory. Under intense American pressure, Baghdad has agreed to shut down offices of the PKK and take other steps to prevent the group from launching attacks in Turkey.
