Iraq Wants U.N. to Renew Coalition Mandate for One Last Time

Baghdad will ask the United Nations to renew the mandate of the American-led coalition one last time, through the end of 2008. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki said on Monday that when the U.N. mandate ends, it should be replaced by a new agreement between Iraq and the United States. Maliki also said that all remaining restrictions on Iraqi sovereignty that were set in place after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990 should be cancelled. Speaking to a national television audience, Maliki said the coalition forces are no longer necessary and that Iraq must be allowed to become a "normal state."
