Iraq’s Mahdi’s Resignation Accepted by Parliament

The resignation of Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has been accepted by the nation’s parliament, but despite it being a basic demand of the protesters who have laid siege to the nation since October 1, demonstrations have not abated. On Sunday, as the violence continued and protesters closed streets, a demonstrator was shot dead in Baghdad. Since the unrest began, the end of “elite” governance has been insisted upon “with no exceptions.” Government troops are continuing to use live ammunition to control the protesters, as was the case with the one killed on Sunday. In Basra, local reports indicated the demonstrations were primarily composed of students and teachers, many of whom wore black to honor those killed by the government since October 1. During that time, some 400 demonstrators have died in the streets.
