Iraqi Prime Minister Mehdi has submitted his resignation to parliament in an emergency cabinet session. The new designation will mean it is unable to pass legislation or make any significant decisions. Mehdi had praise for the government’s accomplishments despite its ultimate demise. The young demonstrators who have pushed for Mehdi to resign continue to insist they will settle for nothing less than all key players’ leaving public service. There have been about 400 deaths at anti-government rallies since they began on October 1, 2019. On Saturday in Najaf, security forces, using live fire, killed three demonstrators and wounded 24 others. In recent days in Nasiriya alone, at least 31 have been killed.
