Islamic Cleric Tells Women Not to Watch Football (with Men’s Knees Exposed)

Women should not be watching men’s soccer (football) matches because the players are so immodestly dressed that their knees are exposed according to an Islamic clergyman in India. Mufti Athar Kasmi is the senior religious head at Asia’s most influential Sunni seminary, Darul Uloom, at Deoband, a town in northern India. The Associated Press reported that in his sermon on Friday, Kasmi lashed out at men who allow their wives to watch soccer, even on television. He was quoted as admonishing, “Do you have no shame? Do you not fear God? You let her watch these kinds of things.” But lest there be any confusion, Kasmi was specific in his explanation of the dangers, asking his audience, “Why do women need to watch these football matches? What they will gain by looking at footballer’s thighs. Their attention will be on that only and they will even miss the scores.”
