The Alsumaria News reported that Islamic State gunmen have executed 27 civilians at a military base in Kirkuk, one of the few areas in Iraq the group still controls. The report said that Islamic State has carried out a series of executions of “non-compliant prisoners’ recently. Since Islamic State took over large parts of Iraq in 2014 they have executed thousands of civilians on charges of collaborating with Iraqi forces or violating the groups’ strict Islamic rules. Local tribal leaders from Kirkuk have called on the Iraqi government to try to take back control of Kirkuk as they have done with Mosul in recent months.
