An Islamic summit attended by 57 nations on Saturday threw its collective support to the Palestinians over the United States peace initiative. The Organization of Islamic States convened in Mecca where, in addition to the support for the Palestinians, also embraced Saudi Arabia in its confrontation with Iran. The United States was strongly condemned for declaring Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel and for supporting the annexation of the Golan Heights. King Salman of Saudi Arabia told the gathering that, “The Palestinian cause is the cornerstone of the works of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and is the focus of our attention until the brotherly Palestinian people get all their legitimate rights. We reaffirm our unequivocal rejection of any measures that would prejudice the historical and legal status of Quds (Jerusalem).” The OIS members green-lighted what was described as “escalating tensions” with Iran, the King warning that Iran is threatening global energy supplies.
