Terrorists entered the dormitory of an agricultural college in Potiskum, Nigeria, on Sunday night and slaughtered about 50 students as they slept and set fire to classrooms. The atrocity was the latest incident reflecting the growing Islamist terrorism in the northeastern portion of the country. The exact death toll is still uncertain because some of those taken alive to a local hospital are not expected to survive. All of the dead are between 18 and 22 years of age and are believed to be Muslim, reflecting the makeup of the 1,000-student college. The Islamic uprising in northeastern Nigeria began in 2010 and so far has claimed at least 1,700 lives.
