There are reports of heavy gunfire in Somalia’s second city Baidoa, with eyewitnesses saying the A-Shabab Islamist organization has taken control of key buildings including the parliamentary compound. The fighting erupted just hours after thousands of Ethiopian troops completed their withdrawal from Somalia. A-Shabab opposes peace talks with the Western-backed Transitional Federal Government and has also been fighting other Islamists movements in recent weeks as they battle for control of the country that has been in the throes of civil war for two decades. Thousands of civilians have been killed during street combat over the past couple of years, with many more fleeing the country.
