Israel Begins Construction of Undersea Defensive Wall

Israel has begun construction of the world’s first underwater counterterrorism wall along the Gaza Strip. The structure is described as an “impregnable breakwater” which will be composed of multiple layers, including fortified fences, stone and barbed wire. The project was born of a failed 2014 terrorist attack in which six armed men came ashore from the Mediterranean with arms and explosives. Although the terrorists were intercepted, the incident cast light on the intent of terrorist organizations to use marine landings as a tactic. Israeli defense planners believe the underwater barrier takes one serious weapon out of the hands of Hamas and other Gaza-based terrorist organizations. Israeli intelligence believes that Hamas has spent millions of dollars in equipping and training a naval commando force with the capabilities of carrying out sea landings, entering Jewish homes, and killing or capturing residents. When completed, the underwater barrier will run for 64 kilometers – some 38.5 miles. Meanwhile, Hamas continues it efforts to perfect kites and drones as delivery vehicles for explosives dropped into Israeli territory. Since mid-April, some 300 incendiary kites – kites with explosives in tow that are dropped on to fields and targets to spread destructive fires – have been seen. Millions of dollars of damage have been done to crops by 100 kites that destroyed 1,000 acres. Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon vowed that those who fly kites will be treated as if they launched rockets.
