Israel Concerned Over U.S. Sale of F15s to Saudi Arabia

Israel is concerned over a proposed sale of F-15 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, but is not expected to press the matter with the Obama administration any further. The issue has been bantered back-and-forth for some time and as it stands, out of deference to Israeli security concerns, the planes will not be equipped with certain long-range weapons systems and other arms the Israelis fear could be used against them or falls into the hands of enemy forces. The massive deal, which will cost the Saudis about $30 billion, is not expected to face Israeli lobbying for Congress to quash it, even though the Israelis are believed to be unconvinced that the American assurances will provide adequate protection. Successive U.S. administrations have promised that Israel will retain a technological superiority over its neighbors in the Middle East. But the Saudi deal comes when Israel is already concerned about U.S. outreach toward Lebanon through which it is appearing to be increasingly likely that Hizbullah could eventually get its hands on weapons provided to the Lebanese army.
