Israel Crippled by Demonstrations and Strikes Unrelated to Palestinian Conflict

Israel’s security echelon received a taste of nation-wide demonstrations that crippled parts of the country – and were not tied to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Streets were clogged with demonstrators in cities throughout the country on Tuesday evening; and police estimate some 50,000 commuters were caught in traffic. All this after a 19-year old Ethiopian immigrant was shot dead on Sunday by an off-duty policeman who said he feared for his life when he intervened in a street brawl. Tuesday’s violent demonstrations result in a total of at least 100 injuries and 60 arrests throughout the country. In the capital, the Ethiopian demonstrations merged with protests by the ultra-Orthodox community against conscription.
