Israel Erects Security Pavilions at Old City Points Citing Stabbings; Palestinians Balk at Move

A new structure that has the look of a two-story gazebo that was built at the Damascus Gate entrance to Jerusalem’s Old City are, not surprisingly, triggering new criticism and charges between Jewish Israelis and Palestinians. The structures were decided upon several years ago when random stabbings of Israelis entering or leaving the area became frequent. The edifice is a police watch-tower and it came about when in responding to multiple attacks at the Damascus Gate, Prime Minister Netanyahu ordered security officials to make the area “sterile.” The Israelis see the violence in terms of “lone wolf” attacks that are instigated but not directed by channels such as social media. Palestinians, on the other hand, blame Israeli control of the area for the “desperation that fosters violence.”
