Hamas has rejected Israel’s latest position on negotiations aimed at freeing captured soldier Gilad Shalit and asked the German mediator to continue to pursue an agreement. A spokesman for Hamas told Reuters news agency that the group “will not say the deal has reached a dead end.” It is believed that the sticking point continues to be the fate of at least 20 prisoners held by Israel for attacks in which Israeli civilians were killed. Israel is believed to be demanding that some go into exile rather than returning to their West Bank homes, while refusing to release certain prisoners altogether. Shalit has been in captivity since being captured in a cross-border raid in June 2006.
