Israel’s government is not satisfied with Egyptian Foreign Minister Aboul Gheit’s explanation for why on a visit to Beirut he referred to Israel as an “enemy.” Israel’s ambassador to Egypt lodged a formal diplomatic complaint with Egyptian officials on Monday. Aboul Gheit was asked whether his trip to Beirut was a warning to Lebanon over increasing tensions with Israel and replied that he does not transmit messages “from the enemy to a sister state.” Egyptians failed to convince Israel that the foreign minister had meant that Lebanon and Israel consider each other to be enemy states. Aboul Gheit also told his hosts in Beirut that in the event Israel went to war with Lebanon, Egypt would support the Lebanese despite its treaty with Israel.
