Israeli prison officials have reportedly moved 40 hunger striking prisoners to hospital facilities as their protest entered its second month of fasting. About 240 Palestinians in all are fasting to protest their imprisonment under administrative detention without charges or trials. Representatives of a Palestinian prisoners’ rights group were allowed to visit five hunger strikers last week and reported their condition as “deteriorating.” A spokesman for the Israeli Prison Authority characterized the condition of the 240 as “reasonable.” There are about 5,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons.
