Israel Moves Military Maneuvers to Avoid Making Syria Anxious

Israel has moved military maneuvers scheduled to take place on the Golan Heights to another location for fear of further increasing tension with Syria. On September 6 Israel bombed what is believed to have been a nuclear facility under construction with assistance from North Korea. Syria has promised to retaliate, but has not disclosed what form that would take. The Golan Heights is often the setting for Israel‘s military exercises. It was felt, however, that those planned for next week – the largest since Israel‘s 34-day war against Hizbullah in the summer of 2006 – might unnerve the Syrians and increase the possibility of armed conflict.
