Israelis throughout the nation halted whatever activity they were performing when the air raid siren sounded at 10 am and stood at attention for two minutes. The annual ritual marks Holocaust Remembrance Day in the nation that is home to more of the dwindling community of survivors of Hitler’s death machine than any nation on earth. According to Israeli authorities, some 215,000 survivors remain alive in the Jewish state. The siren will sound again next week when for 24 hours tribute is paid to those who died in defense of the nation since its inception after which the country will break into joyous celebration of the state of Israel’s 70th anniversary. Palestinians will simultaneously commemorate “Naqba” – catastrophe – their version of the events of 1948.
