The Israeli military sealed what it claimed is the final attack tunnel built by the Iranian proxy Hizbullah terrorists, but did so only after extracting as much public relations value as possible. On Monday, a number of journalists selected by the army were given a look at the subterranean terror platform complete with statistics and trivia that placed the risk the tunnel and others like it present to the Israeli public. The tunnel on display, which has been under Israeli control for at least six months, lays some 260 feet beneath the surface – the equivalent of a 22-story apartment building on its head – and extended almost a mile in length and traveling from its origin in southern Lebanon into – and beneath – Israeli territory. Notable in the passageway were the sophisticated power and communications systems. The military expresses certainty that all tunnels have been discovered and neutralized, despite concerns to the contrary from residents of northern communities. The team responsible for the intelligence, technological and operational aspects of locating and neutralizing the tunnels in northern Israel are being given the defense establishment’s highest prize.
