Israel Records Hottest Summer in History

The Israel Meteorological Service (IMS) announced on Monday that this summer was the hottest in the country since record-keeping began in 1950. The intense heat persisted throughout June, July, and August, making 2024’s summer the warmest ever recorded by a significant margin. This summer surpassed the previous record, set in 2012, by 1°C (1.8°F).

IMS Director Dr. Amir Givati confirmed the severity of the heat, stating, “The Meteorological Service’s summer report confirms what we all felt: 2024’s summer was the hottest in Israel since measurements began.”

The average daily temperature across the country from June through August reached 29°C, setting a new record. The highest temperature recorded this summer was 46.7°C, which was measured in the Sea of Galilee region in northeastern Israel.

The IMS attributed the unusual heat primarily to the exceptionally high sea temperatures, which reached up to 32°C on some days. These unprecedented sea temperatures contributed significantly to the overall rise in temperatures across the country.

This extreme weather follows a trend of increasing temperatures globally. The IMS’s findings highlight the growing concerns over climate change and its impact on local and global weather patterns.
