Israel’s Ministry of Defense has revealed the dollar value of stipends the Palestinian Authority pays to terrorists and their families. Combined payments totaling more than 1.2 billion shekels ($349 million) were paid in 2017 to those killed or wounded and to prisoners and freed prisoners. The practice, which comes against the background of a cash-poor PA that threatens dissolution and relies on donations from the international community to exist. The payments to terrorists has prompted the U.S. Congress to pass the Taylor Force Act which cuts-off American aid to the PA as long as it makes these payments. On Tuesday, Israel’s Ministry of Defense released specific numbers concerning the practice. A sentence of 3-5 years earns the prisoner 2000 shekels ($582) while a 20 to 35-year sentence is worth NIS10,000 ($2,900) per month for life. Those who are married and those with children are given additional amounts. American lawmakers have argued that the stipends are themselves incitement after captured terrorist have averred that they carried out the act of violence in order to receive the PA stipend. The amounts paid are consistent with the average wage in the West Bank.
