Israel to Clear Mine Fields

The Israeli Defense Ministry has signed an agreement to clear large tracts of the country from mines. It announced Sunday that it had allocated $15 million for initial work to begin. The first mine fields to be clear are expected to be south of the Dead Sea along the Israeli and Jordanian borders and work is expected to begin in March. There are some 32,000 acres of land in Israel that is known to be laid with mines, many of them from over 50 years ago.
