The launch of Israel’s latest drone aircraft was carried out with a maximum of fanfare and public relations on Sunday, apparently aimed at sending a message to Iran. The Heron-TP, with a wingspan equal to that of a Boeing-737 passenger jet, can remain airborne at an altitude of 40,000 feet for 20 hours and carry a wide variety of payloads, from surveillance equipment to armament packages. At the launch, Israeli Air Force Chief Gen. Ido Nehushtan said the drone “has the potential to be able to conduct new missions down the line as they become relevant.” In simple English, that means the Heron-TP has the capability of reaching Iran.
