Israel ‘Went to Sleep’ After 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal but Won’t Do It Again, PM Bennett Says

Israel’s mistake after the signing of the 2015 nuclear agreement is that it became occupied with other things, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Tuesday at the Security & Policy Conference at Reichman University in Herzliya. “Despite all the noise beforehand, once the agreement was signed, it affected us like a sleeping pill. The State of Israel simply went to sleep,” Bennett said. This mistake, he also said “will not be repeated.” Iran and the world powers are set to resume negotiations to restart the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, as the nuclear deal is known, next week in Vienna. Bennett said that even if the sides decide to resume the agreement, “Israel obviously is not a party to the agreement and is not obligated by it.” Israel is surrounded by Iranian proxies ranging from in the northeast Iran-backed Shia militias in Syria, to the south with Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza to the north with Hizbullah in Lebanon and “Iran is reflected in every window in Israel,” the PM said. He said that Israel should use its “relative advantages” to fight Iran, including “our strong economy, cyber capabilities, democracy, international legitimacy, mutual responsibility.” He added that: “The State of Israel must maintain its capabilities to act and its freedom of action, in every situation and under any political circumstances.” On Monday, ahead of the negotiations over the Iran nuclear agreement, which the US will participate in indirectly, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said that the US is not going to offer any unilateral steps in order to get back to the negotiating table.
