Israeli Attack Kills Four U.N. Observers

An Israeli air strike Tuesday on a United Nations position in southern Lebanon left four observers dead. A bomb fired from an Israel Air Force plane hit a patrol base near the border with Israel. Although Israel expressed "deep regret" for the incident, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Anan called the targeting of the U.N. position "deliberate." This evoked an angry response from Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Dan Ayalon, who demanded an apology from Anan. Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Danny Gillerman called Anan’s remarks "premature and erroneous." He said Israel has launched an investigation and will apprise the U.N. of its results.
