Israeli Defense Echelon Tells PM: Iran is “Done-Deal” – Move on to Plan Accordingly

In an open letter published as an advertisement in an Israeli newspaper on Tuesday, sixty-seven former senior members of the Israeli defense establishment, some from the very highest ranks, admonished Prime Minister Netanyahu to recognize that the Iranian nuclear agreement is “an accomplished fact” and instead of fighting the battle that cannot be won, move on to adopt “certain policies in light of” that fact. The letter continues with a call to “renew the trust between and enhance the political and security cooperation with the US administration in order to prepare for the challenges emanating from the agreement.” The letter, which is clearly not an endorsement of the deal, calls for Israel to establish procedures to monitor its implementation “and required measures to be taken in case of its breach.” It also calls for intelligence coordination for monitoring the agreement “and preparation for counter-actions to restrain and negate” what it terms “Iran’s subversive actions.” The second point of the letter calls for the government to “Initiate a political move which will provide credibility to Israel’s support of a two-state solution that will enable…the establishment of a moderate Sunni-Western axis…that will act against extremist forces…”
