Amid rising tensions and a recent mobilization of troops in northern Israel, the Israeli military admitted on Sunday that Hizbullah fighters captured one of its air force drones after it crashed in Lebanon. According to a statement released by the army, the drone’s fiery descent was due to a technical malfunction and “there is no concern of any information leaking” into Hizbullah’s hands. Recent days have been rife with fear in Israel’s northern – and Lebanon’s southern – villages and towns, after an airstrike in Syria against Iranian and Hizbullah bases that was attributed to Israel killed a Hizbullah operative. Declared by Israel, the US and the EU to be a terrorist organization, Hizbullah vowed to avenge its fighter’s death, to which the Israeli army responded with a massive troop reinforcement. Still, with the organization’s forces bogged down in the Syrian quagmire and its political faction facing public outrage over Lebanon’s financial collapse, the odds of a prolonged escalation on the border seem low for now.
