Israel’s Ministry of Health has informed the public that the disease the rest of the world calls “swine flu” is “Mexican flu” to Israelis. The reason: pork is not kosher and the head of the ministry is a “haredi” (often referred to as “ultra-Orthodox”) Jew. The ministry is headed by Deputy Minister Dov Litzman who represents the United Torah Judaism party. He serves as deputy minister with no minister above him because the party will not accept a full minister-ship for reasons related to its refusal to fully embrace the Zionist nature of the state.
