Israeli Housing Ranks 28th out of 36 OECD Member Nations

Organizers of Israel’s second summer of socio-economic protests received fresh material from the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) this week in the form of statistics on the state of housing among the 36 member-states, in which Israel ranks only 28th in this year’s Better Life index. According to the report, the Jewish state is faring worse than Mexico in terms of housing cost, crowding and the home’s basic facilities. Israel also received a jolt in the areas of education and civil engagement, where the ratings were equally dismal. After Israel worked for years to gain membership in the OECD, its citizens quickly discovered that it provided a ready comparison to like-economies. Much of the data has fanned the discontent that spilled into the streets in the form of tent cities and demonstrations last summer and will be repeated this year.
