Israel’s Shin Bet domestic intelligence service is claiming that the illegal immigrants from Africa coming to Israel are unwittingly funding terrorists. According to the agency, the Africans are unknowingly used by the terrorist organizations to launder money ostensibly sent to families back home. The system came to light as part of the preparation of new legislation before the Israeli parliament that aims at prohibiting the migrants from sending money out of the country. Israeli officials believe that about $25 million is being illegally processed each year, most of which ends up in the hands of terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip, West Bank or Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. The Israeli daily Haaretz quoted an African who regularly sends money home explaining that he gives dollars to an intermediary who converts it into Israeli shekels, charging a small fee for the transaction. Beyond that transaction, there is no further action with that currency.
