Israeli Legislature Debate on Armenian Genocide Seen as Slap at Turkey

An Israeli parliamentary committee on Monday will debate setting a national day for recognition of the Armenian genocide – a move destined to incite anger in Turkey, whose relations with the Jewish state have nosedived during the past two years. For Turkey, even the use of the word “genocide” to characterize the systematic killing of as many as 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire – the predecessor to present-day Turkey – after World War I evokes rage. Coming from Israel, which has been on the receiving end of two years’ worth of public hazing from Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan who — among other moves lowered the level of diplomatic relations — the issue is particularly inflammatory. It’s seen by many as an opportunity for Israel to tweak back at the Turks. While the proposal is not new and has been defeated before, this attempt marks the first time the debate will take place in a public forum. It also comes when Turkish sensitivities are high as a result of French legislation that forbids denying the Armenian genocide, triggering a diplomatic crisis between France and Turkey.
