Faced with hostile enemies inching toward the renewal of hostilities simultaneously on two fronts, Israel’s army chief-of-staff has outlined a new 5-year plan to unify the nation’s military strength and the strategy’s used to defend against Hamas in the south and Hizbullah in the north – both Islamist terrorist groups supported by Iran. The plan’s primary innovation is the creation of a command specifically keyed to all matters emanating from Tehran, including a greater role for the Mossad intelligence agency, and focusing the military on high-tech solutions for air, land, sea, cyber and electronic warfare. Observers see the extremely high priority given to the program as evidenced by the army’s decision to begin the approval and implementation aspects now rather than waiting for a new government to be sworn in after the March 2nd election as an indication of the lethality of the present situation. Aside from the need to deal with the unending flow of explosive devices landing in Israeli territory from Gaza Strip launch sites, intelligence reports suggest Lebanon-based Hizbullah is anxious to launch an action from the north with the goal of claiming some amount of land through massive rocket attacks.
