Israeli Military Thwarts Alleged Sniper Attack from Syria

As millions of citizens on Monday headed to the ballot boxes in Israel, the country’s military foiled an attempted sniper attack emanating from the Syrian Golan Heights. According to an IDF statement, a plot reportedly hatched in the Syrian-held town of Quneitra was thwarted when Israeli forces targeted the vehicle involved. The incident came just days after an Israeli drone strike reportedly eliminated one of Hizbullah’s top commanders in the region. Emad Tawil was allegedly spearheading efforts to establish “terror infrastructure” near the shared border from which to launch attacks against the Jewish state. Israeli intelligence officials believe that Iranian-sponsored Hizbullah initiated a “Golan Project” last summer after pro-Syrian government forces recaptured large swaths of the war-torn country’s South. Hizbullah has apparently recruited thousands of people in the Golan to gather intelligence on Israeli military and civilian movements. The IDF also claims that the operatives have access to weapons through Hizbullah and Iranian channels.
