Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert brushed aside calls for a measured reaction by members of his security cabinet on Sunday, saying, "The age of restraint has come to an end." The cabinet, a subcommittee of the full government, was unanimous in its decision to order the army to plan a military response to Sunday’s attack on an army base by Palestinians that cost the lives of two soldiers and saw one kidnapped. Three of the gunmen were also killed. While the military plans its next move, intense diplomatic pressure is being applied to the Palestinian Authority to secure the release of 19-year old corporal Gilad Shalit. Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni has spoken with U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, as well as with her counterparts in European capitals, in each case asking for pressure to be applied to the Palestinians.
