Israeli Prime Minister Testifies in Flotilla Probe

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu became the first senior government official to testify in the probe into events surrounding the May 31 Gaza flotilla affair when he appeared before the Turkel Commission on Monday. Defense Minister Ehud Barak will follow on Tuesday and army Chief-of-Staff Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi will testify on Wednesday. The work of the Turkel Commission will overlap with an investigation empowered by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon which begins its work on Tuesday. At the Sunday cabinet meeting, Netanyahu told his ministers that he expects the two committees his government is dealing with to “direct the opinion of the international community,” as opposed to the Geneva-based U.N. Human Rights Council with Israel believes is hopelessly biased against the Jewish state.
