Israeli, Saudi Ministers Present Like Attacks Against Iran at Munich Conference

The unlikely alliance between Israel and Saudi Arabia has never been more obvious than it was in Munich where ministers from both nations launched into remarkably similar diatribes against Iran at the security conference under way in the German city. Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Judeir seemingly read from the same list of Iranian transgressions and called for the same international responses before being joined in the same vein by Turkey’s representative to the conference. The Israelis and Saudis charged Iran with responsibility for instability in the Middle East, breaking it down to its support for Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad in the civil war that has taken more than 300,000 lives and displaced millions others; its support for the Shiite Houthis in Yemen; and its aggressive program to develop ballistic missiles. Arab critics of Iran, notably the Gulf Cooperation Council, have been charging that Iran is working to build its own sphere of influence in the Middle East, a charge Tehran continues to deny. The commonalities between Israel and Saudi Arabia have not gone unnoticed, and both countries have been asked whether formal diplomatic relations are in the offing. Neither nation will comment.
