Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman claimed that over the past few months security forces have thwarted between 20 and 30 terror attacks in the West Bank each week. “A large-scale operation has been undertaken in response to increasing efforts by terrorist forces,” Israel’s defense chief asserted, while attributing the success to high-quality intelligence-gathering, additional troop deployments and advanced technologies. Liberman’s comments came a day after two Arab-Israeli men were indicted for planning to carry out an Islamic State-inspired suicide attack at either Jerusalem’s Temple Mount—known to Muslims as the Haram al-Sharif, atop which the al-Aqsa mosque sits; a Tel Aviv synagogue; or a central Israeli city with few Muslim residents. According to IDF data, twenty Israelis were killed and 169 injured in 99 terrorist attacks originating in the West Bank in 2017. The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) alone says it prevented about 1,100 potential lone wolf attacks last year.
