Some 50 Israeli settlers and right-wing activists entered a West Bank army base early Tuesday morning and threw rocks, burned tires, vandalized military vehicles and lightly wounded the local brigade commander. They were pushed back by security forces, but the Ha’aretz daily said no arrests were made. The settlers said they rioted after a rumor spread that the army was planning to evict an illegal West Bank Jewish community in accordance with a court ruling. In a separate incident, a group of 17 right-wing activists took over structures near the Jordanian border. Accompanied by television crews, they cut their way through a fence and danced and chanted songs before they were evacuated by troops. Their explanation for the action: A message to Jordan’s King Abdullah to keep out of Temple Mount affairs. Military commanders condemned the first action as “Jewish terror,” and said the second was foolish because they walked through a mine field to reach the border.
