Israeli Strikes Against Iranian Targets in Syria, Kills 16

The Israeli military attacked several Syrian and Iranian targets inside of Syria on Sunday killing sixteen local and foreign fighters in the course of the missions along with a number of civilians. There were also 21 injuries. According to Syrian sources, the bulk of the targets were located around Damascus, Homs in the north and Sahnaya in the south. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the London-based group that has monitored all of the fighting in Syria since the civil war began in 2011, reported that Hizbullah and Iranian Revolutionary Guard bases were among the sites struck by Israeli missiles – at least ten targets belonging to the Syrian government. Large fires were seen burning after the attack indicating hits on arms depots near the Lebanese border were successful. Many of the targets hit were described as research centers and active bases. Unlike after recent strikes, this time the Israelis did not claim responsibility for the attacks. As is often the case, the Israeli missiles were fired from inside of Lebanese air space and anti-missile systems were put into action. Meanwhile, what the Iranian response will be is of concern to Israel’s military echelon. Tehran views President Trump as being handcuffed by Congress and unable to mount any significant action and Israel’s ability to act militarily is in part a function of how far the Russians will allow Jerusalem to go. The absence of a response by the US following the attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman is being viewed with concern as a possible green light for Iranian adventurism.
