In a groundbreaking study, Israeli scientists have identified a biological mechanism linking heart attacks to an increased risk of developing cancer. Researchers from Tel Aviv University (TAU) and the Israel Cancer Association unveiled findings Tuesday that show how small extracellular vesicles, released by the heart after a myocardial infarction, play a significant role not only in repairing heart tissue but also in potentially fostering cancer cell growth. The study, detailed in the journal Circulation, highlights the vesicles’ influence on the immune system, observed through mouse experiments, raising concerns over their ability to encourage cancer proliferation. This discovery opens new pathways for enhancing heart disease treatments by addressing the cancer risk connection, with the potential for identifying biomarkers in heart patients that signify a heightened cancer risk.
