Israeli Supreme Court Reinstates Candidacy of Palestinian Banned by Election Committee

A Palestinian lawmaker serving in the Israeli parliament who was banned from seeking re-election by the election committee has been reinstated as a candidate by order of the Supreme Court. The lawmaker, Yeba Hazbak, was disqualified from running after she posted a photo of one of the most notorious terrorists who killed an Israeli father and daughter in 1979, calling him a “martyr.” She also posted a photo of a female terrorist who killed 35 Israelis in 1972, including words of praise for her. The leader of the Joint List — an umbrella bloc of Arab Israeli parties – charged the political right wing of incitement for challenging Hazbak’s right to run for parliament, while not commenting on charges that Hazbak’s praise of the perpetrators of the most heinous terrorist acts is itself, incitement. Meanwhile, Sheikh Ra’ad Salah, former head of the Islamic Movement in Israel, was sentenced to more than two years in prison for incitement to terrorism for his praise of terrorists who carried out an attack and killed two Border Policemen on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount.
