A Turkish newspaper is quoting a government official in saying the long-awaited deal putting the Mavi Marmara flotilla crisis to bed will soon be signed. On May 31, 2010, Israeli naval commandoes boarded the Turkish-flagged ship that set sail as part of a flotilla aimed at breaking Israel’s boycott of the Gaza Strip. Nine Turkish nationals died in the ensuing violent struggle on board the ship and what was left of Israeli-Turkish relations at the time devolved into total hostility. Negotiations focused on whether Israel would agree to pay reparations to the families of those killed. It is believed that Israel will pay around $20 million.
