Most Israelis Oppose Legislation that would Halt Investigations of Sitting Prime Minister

A bill submitted to Israel’s parliament that would prohibit law enforcement agencies from conducting investigations of a sitting prime minister is opposed by a firm majority of the people according to a new poll. The proposed legislation was drafted by supporters of incumbent Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who is the subject of at least four separate corruption probes. Fearing he will have to step down if indicted in any of the cases, Netanyahu’s loyalists have initiated the bill that would protect him from the investigations that are presently under way. But if the poll is accurate, even half of the PM’s own party reject the idea of using legislation to codify one party’s political strategy. Even putting opposition lawmakers aside, member-parties of Netanyahu’s own coalition strongly reject the bill which would protect the prime minister from all investigations except murder, rape or high treason.
