Israelis Say Gaza Closure to Continue; Massive Number of Gazans Enter Egypt

Israel‘s defense minister said on Wednesday that the siege of the Gaza Strip will continue, but with an estimated 350,000 Palestinians pouring through the breached walls separating Rafah from Egypt, Israel‘s ability to "seal-off" Gaza remains in doubt. Defense Minister Ehud Barak told his French counterpart in Paris that "unless there is peace, the Palestinians won’t have quiet, either." Prime Minister Olmert told a conference that targeted killings of terrorist leaders in Gaza will continue, and that Israel would use steps that affect the quality of life of Gaza‘s residents but take care to avoid creating a humanitarian crisis. But the Palestinians were reveling in what they saw as a double victory over the Israelis – the international media’s portrayal of Israel as using brutal and anti-humanitarian methods against the Palestinians; and the Palestinians’ (read: Hamas) ability to "break the Israeli siege" — both figuratively and literally — with the breach of the Rafah-Egypt border wal and the massive outpouring of citizens into Egypt where they shopped for goods not available in Gaza. Israeli officials are furious at the Egyptians, whom they demanded should "fix" the situation. The White House reiterated its support for Israel. Spokesperson Dana Perino reminded reporters that the "genesis of this situation" is [Palestinians] "sending over to Israel upwards of 150 rockets a day that are landing in its territory. So Israel’s defending itself."
