Ethiopian women were given contraceptive shots by Israeli health services without fully understanding the implications according to Health Ministry Director General Prof. Ron Gamzu. The ministry had denied the practice when the story broke five years ago, but now Gamzu has sent a letter to each of the nation’s five HMOs instructing them not to renew prescriptions for Depo-Provera if there is “any reason” to believe they “might not understand the ramifications of the treatment.” Women’s rights groups took on the issue after seeing the birth rate among Ethiopian immigrants drop drastically – 50% — in a span of ten years.
